Europeans on Bush and Americans

The New York Times puts it beautifully:
Before Mr. Bush's re-election, the prevailing attitude in Europe was definitely: "We're not anti-American. We're anti-Bush." But now that the American people have voted to re-elect Mr. Bush, Europe has a problem maintaining this distinction.
Exactly. The thinking goes something like this - in Europe, George W Bush is universally portrayed as being a bit thick. Alright, downright stupid. It is almost unheard of for someone with a low IQ to be voted in to head a government in Europe; you're unlikely to vote for someone who is less intelligent than you are, therefore 51% of Americans must be at least as stupid as Bush is. And does anyone actually believe this empty rhetoric?

You Europeans never got over us throwing the Brits out in 1776. Sorry if our choice in leaders hurts your collective pride.

Nobody ever said America was perfect. We got plenty of faults. But the prevailing attitude on your end of the pond is one of disgust, hatred and perhaps downright envy at the fact that the United States is a world power and England is no longer. At least your leader, Tony Blair, understands the threats to world stability that the free world faces. Unlike some who, like Neville Chamberlain, would bury their heads in the sand like cowards and make peace with evil at all costs.

Your hatred of President Bush is so evident. It's folks like you who wish to see any social behavior allowed, but anyone who stands up for what's right imprisoned. It's the homosexual crowd who have this all or nothing attitude of either getting your way, or destroying it so nobody gets their way. No, I take it back. Its the LIBERAL crowd with a thrash and burn policy.

You may find this hard to believe, but I'm not a big Bush supporter. In fact I have real problems with some of his plans and policies. But, he's a damn sight better than any Democrat over here. And, while I disagree with him on many issues I do support him as our leader. I don't find him dull, nor do I think he's not intelligent. He IS paid for by big business, which I have a problem with but morally he's right on track.

It's too bad that mother England is degenerating, socially and morally as badly as it is. It's rather sad to think that her majesty the queen doesn't speak out against the moral injustices that happen to good honest people in your country. I should hope that one day the United Kingdom would get it's act together.

The defining statement of Bush's presidency has been, 'you're either with us or against us in the fight against terror', and it is that inability to see colours between black and white that has alienated your nation from so many others. If you opposed going into Iraq without proper planning, you were against the war on terror. If you believe that holding hundreds of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay without charge is a disgrace, you obviously support the terrorists.

If you want to let Bush run your economy and country into the ground, that is nobody's business but your own. As long as you agree with his moral values, I guess it can be forgiven:

- turning a $5.6 trillion surplus into a $5.2 trillion deficit.
- number of people without healthcare increased by 5.2 million to 44 million.
- poverty rate among children at it's highest for 10 years.

I can assure you, envy doesn't come into it.

Until 3 years ago you had a great, respected country and had the opportunity to make it so again in November. You chose not to.

I didn't realise that current anti-French feeling in the US went so far as to erase their contribution in beating the British forces from history?
I dare say the Spanish were happy to see the end of British rule in America too.

Do you honestly think that we Europeans give any thought whatsoever to the fact that you were once a British colony?

In day-today life I've rarely met any Americans I haven't got along with, my experience is that you're generally a friendly and pleasant lot ...it's just that George Bush seems to encapsulate the stereotypical "If it moves - shoot it, and if it doesn't - stick a flag in it" gung-ho attitude.
